Bangladesh Nari Pragati Sangha (BNPS) demanded appropriate steps against Bogura-7 MP Rezaul Karim Bablu for his speech through a letter signed by BNPS Executive Director Rokeya Kabir to the Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on 19th of November 2020. The letter requested the Speaker to remove the speech of Rezaul Karim from the Parliament’s minutes.

In his speech at the parliament on November 17, Mr. Bablu blamed feminist movement for the rise of rape incidents across the country. He said, “in the name of women’s liberation, feminists are continuing to make women vulnerable to rape. This has increased the acceptability of rape so much among rapists that they are encouraged to commit the act.” He even advocated the implementation of the “tamarind theory (women are like tamarinds, men will salivate at the sight of them, and so they must remain covered)” of late Hefajat-e-Islam Amir Ahmad Shafi.

BNPS strongly protested such utterances and said, `his speech was against the spirit of the constitution of Bangladesh and the liberation war, and equal rights of women and men. BNPS also requested to take appropriate steps so that all the honorable members of the parliament should refrain themselves from such type of speeches in future.
